Lapland's three ice bars: SnowVillage in Lainio, Arctic SnowHotel near Rovaniemi and Snowman World at Santa Claus Village. Seasons, prices, what to wear.
Built from snow and ice every winter. Melted every spring. Gone until next December. This is not a theme bar. It is a seasonal Arctic phenomenon.
Every autumn, crews of ice artists and construction workers descend on the snow villages of Finnish Lapland. They cut blocks of ice from frozen lakes, pack tonnes of snow into moulds, and sculpt bars, chairs, arches and figures by hand. By December, the results are ready: fully functioning bars operating at -5°C, where every surface, the walls, the bar counter, the glasses, is made of ice.
Each year brings a new theme. The sculptures are never the same. What you experience in one winter will not exist in the next. That impermanence is the point. An ice bar is temporary by definition, and that is exactly what makes it worth experiencing before it is gone.
Snow suites at Arctic SnowHotel, Lainio Snow Village and Kakslauttanen rebuild every December. -5 °C inside, thermal-rated sleeping bag, breakfast in the warm restaurant. One night is plenty. You will remember it for years.
Around -5°C inside. All ice bars provide thermal capes, suits or jackets included in the entry price. Dress in layers underneath.
Most visitors spend 20–45 minutes inside. Enough for 1–2 drinks and photos. Your fingers will tell you when it is time to leave.
Classic cocktails, warm mulled wine, and Arctic-inspired specials. Served in cups or glasses made of ice, yes, you drink from ice.
Open from approximately December to April, depending on temperatures. Some years are longer. Ice bars do not exist in summer.
Carved entirely from snow and ice each winter by international ice artists. New theme and sculptures every season. Drinks served in glasses made of pure Arctic ice. Part of the Snow Village complex, combine it with a night in a snow suite.
Located at Arctic SnowHotel on the shores of Lake Lehtojärvi. Rebuilt every winter with new artistic themes, carved by Finnish and international artists. Thermal suits provided. The lake setting makes this one of the most atmospheric ice bars in the world.
Inside the legendary Snowman World at Santa Claus Village, a different kind of ice bar experience, more family-friendly and accessible. Hot drinks and cold cocktails served amid snow sculptures. Good option if you are combining the ice bar with a Santa visit.
